The CDC has created a new section on their website called CDC Parent Information. The new section offers a wealth of information from across all of the CDC resources, covering everything from safety in the home and the community to immunization schedules and developmental milestones

New York, NY – The William J. Clinton Foundation today launched its "Take Initiative" Earth Day campaign featuring a website www.clintonfoundation.org/earthday encouraging people to take initiative to combat climate change and improve the environment. The campaign is supporting local volunteer events in several cities nationwide, culminating in a special online forum with President Bill Clinton on April 22.

During his administration, and now through his Foundation, President Clinton has worked to address global challenges, including climate change and sustainable economic growth and development.

"Since 2006, my Foundation has worked to fight climate change by increasing energy efficiency and decreasing greenhouse gas emissions on a large scale, including projects that have helped to retrofit tens of millions of square feet of building space and enabled smallholder famers to plant millions of fruit and forest tree seedlings," President Clinton said. "To commemorate the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, my Foundation invites everyone to join us in the fight by taking initiative in their own homes and communities. I look forward to a lively and interesting dialogue about what we can all do to build a more sustainable world."

Throughout the campaign, an online quiz will test people’s knowledge on climate change. For every person who takes the quiz, $2 will be donated toward buying solar flashlights for people living in tent camps in Haiti. If 100,000 people take the quiz, the Foundation will reach its goal of sending 20,000 solar flashlights to improve safety conditions in camps.

By visiting www.clintonfoundation.org/earthday, people can also learn about the Foundation’s climate and environment-related initiatives and sign up to participate in local volunteer events in several cities nationwide.

At the end of the campaign, President Clinton will answer questions in an online forum on Earth Day, April 22. Details will be made available on the website in the coming days.

To date the Clinton Foundation’s climate and environment-related accomplishments include:

The Clinton Climate Initiative (CCI) has helped initiate more than 250 energy efficiency building retrofit projects in more than 20 cities around the world. In Los Angeles, CCI is helping the city replace 140,000 streetlights with LED fixtures, which will cut CO2 emissions in the city by 40,500 tons and save the city up to $10 million each year in energy and maintenance costs. CCI is also part of the team that is helping to make the Empire State Building more energy efficient by reducing its energy usage by 38 percent, saving $4.4 million in annual energy costs, and preventing 105,000 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions over the next 15 years.
Through projects implemented by government, business, and nonprofit partners of the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI), enough clean energy has been generated to power more than 400,000 homes, and CGI commitments have prevented 60 million metric tons of CO2 emissions.
The Clinton Hunter Development Initiative instituted a large-scale carbon sequestration program with thousands of local farmers in Africa by growing and planting over 4 million trees in the region that are estimated to be saving approximately 450,000 tons of carbon.

Tutoring Help Returns

HomeworkKansas is a tutoring service that connects Kansas students (elementary through college, including adult education) to one-on-one help with live tutors.

Students can connect to tutors from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., seven days a week. HomeworkKansas is also available in Spanish everyday from 1:00 p.m. to 11 p.m.. Help is available in the following subjects:

• Math: elementary, algebra I, algebra II, geometry, trigonometry and calculus
• Science: elementary, earth science, biology, chemistry, physics
• Social studies: American History, World History, Political Science and more
• English: spelling, grammar, book reports, essay writing and more

It's true that this website does not have some of the elements that are needed to make it a reliable site, but there is neat stuff here, none-the-less. Just be sure to corroborate the information with another source or two.

The Advameg site provides links to other website covering topics such as chemistry, foods of the world, countries of the world, surgery, photos, and much more. It is a wiki format so use with caution but have fun, too.

Health Resource: Go Local Kansas

Go Local Kansas (www.golocalkansas.org) allows consumers to find contact information for health care providers such as hospitals, county health departments, support groups, nursing homes, and community clinics. Users can search by location, type of facility, or a specific disease or condition. Information from all counties in Kansas will be available.

Governor Kathleen Sebelius signed a proclamation declaring January 29th, 2009, Go Local Kansas Day and encourages residents to visit the site “today and every day in 2009 to locate health resources in their community”.

Go Local Kansas is part of a statewide health information initiative encouraging Kansans to take charge of their health. Kansas Health Online (www.kansashealthonline.org) is a health information web site, which launched last year and is sponsored by the Kansas Health Policy Authority and developed by biomedical librarians at Dykes Library. It includes information on diseases and conditions, tools and tips to make healthy lifestyle decisions, and a guide to health policy in Kansas.

Library Website Simplified!

In an effort to simplify the chaos, the library webpage has recently changed.

The “Resources by Division” link has been removed. Now use the “Resource Databases” link. The “State Library of Kansas Resources” is the primary gateway to information. The advantage of the SLK link is that no log-in or passwords are required, whether on campus or off. As long as you are in Kansas you can access these resources.*

Enter your search terms in the “Find” box. A list of books, magazines, and other electronic resources is returned. There are two frames. The left hand frame provides a summary of the search results, grouped by type of resource. The right hand frame is the detailed list of hits, grouped by type of resource. For more details on how to navigate this website, contact the library at 341-1323 or janderso@fhtc.edu.

The remaining items on the “Resources by Division” page are also available on the FHTC network without passwords. If you want to access these off the network contact the library at 341-1323 or janderso@fhtc.edu.

At this time, no other changes have been made to the FHTC Library webpage.

*If your IP provider does not reside in Kansas then you may not be able to access the website without a Kansas Library Card pin number. Follow the on-screen instructions provided.

It's the start of an exciting new semester! The library is open 7:30 am to 4:00 pm Monday through Friday. A bit later in the semester we hope to add hours so keep watching for that update.
